We were in Porto in January. The flight time from Berlin to Porto was 3 hours and the flight was in the evening, so we had a full weekend in the north of Portugal. We visited many of the city's historical museums. We recommend public transportation and a daily or weekly pass. Don't forget an umbrella, as January is actually the rainy season. However, we were lucky with sunshine and a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius.
Highligts
We really liked the beautiful old town. The weather was pleasant at the end of January in the north of Portugal, sunny and 15 degrees Celsius. Many nice restaurants in Porto. The reasonable prices on site convinced us.
Hidden gems
A day pass or weekly ticket for the metro is recommended. Check in at the airport in good time.
Destination recommendation
The short flight times from Germany.

We went on a cruise and Porto was one of the destinations.
As we only had one day, we opted for an e-bike tour, which was absolutely the right decision!
The city has lots of parks, everything is beautifully green!
First of all, we went to the Livraria Lello, where J. K. Rowling got her idea for Harry Potter. But be careful: bring time, because you have to queue for a long time and there is an entrance fee (tip: the entrance fee is deducted when you buy a book).
Then we continued to the waterfront, around Ponte Dom Luis I. Here you have to be lucky to get a free seat at the dozens of restaurants, but it's worth it, even if it is very expensive (tip: there's a McDonalds above, it's quicker 😄). From here you have a great view of the 385m long arched bridge. So sit down and enjoy a glass of wine!
Highligts
The highlight of the trip was definitely not the bookshop 'Livraria Lello' (where the idea for Harry Potter was born). And the Pasteis de Nata pastry.
Hidden gems
You have to try a Pasteis de Nata!

I was in Porto in December, which is perhaps not the ideal time to go there. What's more, it rained cats and dogs during my entire stay. And then, unfortunately, the city is no fun at all. Nevertheless, I was able to discover some nice sights: the famous ceramics, for example, or a cable car ride from the lower town to the upper town. The city center is compact and easy to walk around, bus and train are not absolutely necessary to get around. You should also try the Portuguese patisserie specialties!
Highligts
The ceramics are of course beautiful, e.g. at Porto São Bento station.
Hidden gems
My "insider tip" would be to get off the beaten track. There's a lot to discover here too, even if it's not in any travel guide.
Destination recommendation
I would recommend this destination to anyone who would like to spend their vacation in a city by the sea with a historical flair and is not too bothered by crowds of tourists
Pros
Relatively compact city center
Cons
Hard to bear in the rain
Touristically hyped and overcrowded

In my opinion, the whole trip was a dream. My favorite part was definitely the day trip to the Douro River. The food in Porto is also very good and highly recommended. I went to the Barrica by YoursPorto restaurant and had the best fish of my life. The public transport is very well organized and really easy to use. On my next trip, I would book earlier and definitely stay longer. For me personally, Valencia was the most beautiful city I've been to so far.
Highligts
A great experience was the Estadio do Drago, which is an absolute highlight for any soccer fan. Another excellent experience was the day trip to the Douro. For me personally, this was the absolute highlight of my Porto trip.
Hidden gems
A great insider tip is the Barrica by YoursPorto restaurant. This restaurant was super nice and really very good to eat at.
Destination recommendation

Apartments in Oporto: a city with charisma by the Douro River
Located in the north of Portugal, in the city of Oporto you can breathe a certain air of decadence walking through its old alleys, contrasted by its elegant neighborhoods. The city offers the traveler the possibility of staying in any of its many apartments. In Porto there are numerous accommodations and vacation rentals, places where you can relax for very little money but with all the necessary comforts.
The weather in Porto
The climate of this city is temperate and humid with hot and sunny summers and with an average temperature of 70ºF. That is why any time of the year is good to make a trip to the apartments in Porto. Summer storms are quite frequent and usually last several days. In winter the temperatures are not excessively cold with an average of 50ºF, although the rains are very prolonged during this period.
On the other hand the autumns are very pleasant although with frequent rains and during the springs the sun shines almost all day and the temperatures are not as high as in summer. Undoubtedly, this is the ideal period to enjoy a few days of rest in the Oporto apartments.
Rent a vacation home in Porto to enjoy the beaches
Although Porto is a modern city, it is also surrounded by beautiful beaches. You can even rent your accommodation from our vacation rentals in Porto, right next to them. Easily accessible, Matosinhos beach is just 20 minutes from the center by metro. The mouth of the Douro River has the particularity of dividing the city into two zones, one of which is on the northern coastline, the Costa de Verde (Green Coast), and the other to the south is called the Costa de Prata (Silver Coast).
By booking in one of our vacation rentals in Porto, close to the seaside resorts, you are sure to enjoy a family vacation placed under the sign of absolute relaxation. You can surf the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, sunbathe on the white sand or simply watch a unique sunset. In short, Porto is the perfect destination for the whole family, young and old, including those who want to go out at night and immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere of the city center.
Typical dishes of Oporto
If this city is also known for something, it is for its excellent food. Be sure to try its typical dish: the francesinha, a toast of bread that is stuffed with meat and different sausages and covered with cheese for gratin later. It is usually served with a rich spicy sauce prepared with tomato and beer.
Very popular is also the dish of cow tripe, a recipe that dates back to the 15th century, when the infante D. Henrique asked the people to give him all their food and they only kept the tripe. This dish is served with legumes and nowadays other meats and even ham are added.
Although cod is the most typical dish in the whole country and is prepared in many different ways, the truth is that in Vitória it is also very popular the francesinha, a dish with a bread base to which meat and sausage is added and covered with spicy sauce and grilled cheese.
Soup is also very famous and is prepared with various ingredients. Regarding desserts, the best known is the Belem cake and among the drinks, of course, the port, a wine prepared in their own cellars.
For your part, the second day of the trip can be dedicated to travel from your Porto vacation apartment to some of the best surrounding beaches. For example, you can use public transport or hire a car to take you from your accommodation in central Porto to Foz do Douro. This neighboring town is home to some of the most interesting in the region. But if you are looking for something quieter, you should also visit Vila Nova de Gaia or Matosinhos. These are enclaves where it is also a good idea to rent an apartment as holiday accommodation and then get ready to visit the main local monuments.
The third day you stay in an accommodation in Porto could be dedicated to a tour of the main wineries in Porto. The most prominent are located on the banks of the Douro River in front of the city. The area is known as Gaia and its most famous meeting point is Arribes del Duero, very close to the Spanish border. If time is short, spend the morning visiting the Pinto Ramos Winery, 3 miles from the center, and the afternoon visiting the Porto Cruz Winery, 4 miles away. Next to the latter there is a magnificent viewpoint from which to contemplate the sunset with great delight.
