The capital of the island state of Malta, Valletta, offers something for every taste. There are countless cafés, restaurants and stores for everyday needs in the old town, and lovers of luxury brands can also get their credit cards glowing. Valletta has been the location for numerous Hollywood films thanks to its medieval buildings. The kilometer-long promenade right by the sea is a wonderful place to relax with long walks. From the upper parts of the city, you have a spectacular view of the harbor and the sea between Valletta and the village of Kalkara.

Highligts

A walk along the promenade or a trip on the ferry from Valletta to Siema. The mega view from Lower Barrakka Park over the harbor and the village of Kalkara.

Hidden gems

Many Hollywood film locations can be found in the old town of Valletta and the surrounding area. Coffee is comparatively cheaper than in Germany.

Destination recommendation

As the capital of the island state of Malta, there is something for everyone in the metropolis. Whether it's culture, cuisine or boat trips on the sea or walks along the promenade or shopping in the old town.

Pros

Lots of culture and sights worth seeing

High level of hospitality

Cons

Overcrowded old town due to docking cruise ships

There is often garbage lying around on the streets on the outskirts of the city

Best for

Nature lovers

Enjoying early spring on a Mediterranean island. That was the goal. Malta seemed to be perfect for this. Nature had already awoken and the first streams of tourists were already pouring over the island. Undeterred by this, it was time to set off on a discovery tour. A rental car is essential. The highlight of the island for us was the old town of Mdina. You should definitely take a day for it. But the old town of Valletta should not be missing from your itinerary either. You can drive right up to the gates of the city by car and park there quite cheaply. We walked all the way through the city and then along the coast. There is a wonderful view of the harbor from there. Of course, we couldn't miss the Grand Master's Palace. However, I was surprised by the high entrance fee (€15). But there is an audio guide. If you are interested in the history of Malta/Valletta, I would of course recommend this tour of the palace.

Highligts

Many historic towns. Breathtaking stretches of coastline with great bathing areas

Hidden gems

St. Peter's Pool - great seaside resort. Mdina old town

Destination recommendation

Mild climate, perfect for language travel

Pros

Historic old town

Nice people

Cons

Quite crowded with tourists at Easter

Valletta is a particularly beautiful city, which scores extremely well with people who are interested in history. The history is incredible and is beautifully underlined by the architecture. I particularly liked the city center and the parks and gardens. The local food is phenomenal and there is something for everyone. Getting around there by car and cab is very good, especially Uber is very cheap. On my next trip, I would try to rent a car, as getting around by bus is not highly recommended. Nevertheless, it is a very beautiful city that you should definitely see at least once.

Highligts

Valletta is a very beautiful city with very special architecture. It has super beautiful alleyways and extremely good food.

Hidden gems

An insider tip is a boat tour on the water in a traditional boat. This trip was very romantic at sunset and extremely cheap.

Destination recommendation

Valletta is a beautiful city with an impressive history and beautiful architecture.

Pros

Valletta has very good restaurants

It has an impressive history and many special buildings

Cons

Unfortunately very crowded in the high season

Can be relatively expensive if you are not careful

Valletta is a beautiful city with a very special culture and atmosphere. It is fun to explore the small alleyways with the typical Maltese colorful bay windows. The streets, some of which are endlessly long and run from one end of the peninsula to the other, provide an impressive backdrop. The uniform style of the town with beige/yellow limestone buildings and colorful bay windows is very vivid Valletta is very easy to get around on foot, although there are some steep differences in height in the city. The pedestrian areas are beautiful and offer plenty of stores and restaurants. I ate a local fish soup here, which was very cheap and delicious! The Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens in particular offer a spectacular view of Valletta, the sea and the surrounding districts and are beautifully decorated gardens in themselves and are also completely free of charge. The War Museum in Fort St. Elmo is definitely worth a visit. Here you can learn a lot about the most important events in Maltese history and Malta's strategic role in the Second World War. The Casa Rocca Piccola is also worth a visit for €9.50. Here, several historical rooms and many associated antiques are on display in a noble pallazzo. You also have the opportunity to visit the air raid shelters under the building, of which there are many in Malta due to the Second World War. The rooms are beautifully furnished and fully accessible, you can even sit on the sofas. The Maltese Parliament right next to the main bridge into the city is also very interesting. An absolute highlight for me in April was the start of the annual fireworks festival in Valletta harbor, which I only discovered by chance. The hour-long spectacle was perfect to watch from the Lower Barrakka Gardens and I have to say that it was the most beautiful firework display I have ever seen. There was also atmospheric live music and street food in the harbor area. I highly recommend the Maltese pastizzis, small puff pastries filled with cheese, chicken or peas. Very tasty, very cheap (80 cents) and available everywhere! Depending on the location, it can unfortunately take a relatively long time to get into the city by bus, as they have many stops and the traffic situation is generally tense. Unfortunately, you can't see much of the beautiful Maltese countryside in Valletta apart from the sea and the coast, so you have to drive out of the city. Overall, Valletta is highly recommended for a city break, the city is really unique and there is so much to discover!

Highligts

The War Museum in Fort St. Elmo is well worth a visit and offers a good insight into Malta's turbulent history as well as a great view of the sea and surrounding districts. The Casa Rocca Piccola Museum is a noble, historic pallazzo that is still inhabited by the family that runs it and serves as a museum. Many beautiful rooms and antiques are on display here, freely accessible and without annoying barriers, giving visitors a very interesting insight into the life of a noble family that still exists today.

Hidden gems

For a great view of the surrounding districts and bays, the free Hastings Garden right next to the main entrance to the city is ideal.

Destination recommendation

Valletta is a very cool city with a very special atmosphere, lots of culture, beautiful colorful alleys and a top location right on the Mediterranean Sea

Pros

Beautiful streets and alleyways

Top viewpoints by the sea and harbor

Cons

Buses unfortunately relatively unreliable

Lots of garbage on the streets

Best for

Fans of city breaks

We visited Valetta as part of a day trip. Valetta is well worth a visit. In addition to many museums and palaces, there are great places by the water. There are also many small restaurants and cafés. It's easy to get around on foot. I would avoid visiting the city at the weekend as there are very long queues at the sights.

Highligts

Museum, palace, cafés and bars

Hidden gems

Small bay below the Lower Battery. Be sure to try Pastizzi in Malta

Destination recommendation

Good mix of culture and culinary delights

Pros

Museum

Café

Cons

Many tourists

Long queues
