The home of the famous Hippocrates, this Greek island is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Situated close to the coast of Turkey, Kos is the third largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago. It used to form part of a chain of Ancient Greek colonies which stretched from the Black Sea to North Africa.
Just over 200 nautical miles away from the Greek capital, Athens, it offers wonderful climate and some interesting history to enjoy alongside its more obvious holiday attractions. Firstly, anyone heading for a trip to Kos holiday villas should know that the island is the birthplace of the Ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates, viewed by many as the founder of modern medicine, was born on the island in 460 BC. Following his death, the people of Kos erected the Asklepeion. This large hospital functioned according to the principles set out by Hippocrates, and its ruins can still be seen on the island to this day.
