We stayed in a vacation home on the outskirts of the city. We took the bus from there to the city center. There we went on a tour of the city and visited the most famous buildings. For example, the National Theater and the city tower. Afterwards, we went to the various beaches in the city. I liked the Villa Nora beach best, as it was less crowded. Then we went into the city center and ate in one of the restaurants. We came back again by bus. Next time I would take more time to visit the city center.

Hidden gems
The Vila Nora beach was far less frequented than the Sabliveco beach.

We stayed in accommodation in the middle of the city. In the morning, we went to the city center by bike. From there, we visited the city's most famous buildings. The church was particularly worth seeing. We then went to the harbor and went on a boat tour. You could even see dolphins. You could eat quite comfortably in a restaurant at the harbor. Next time, however, I would plan the boat tour in advance and call the restaurant so that you don't have to wait so long.

We spent a long time visiting the city center. The guided tour of the church was particularly long. We then took a short boat trip from the harbor.

The boat trip was very worthwhile. But you should plan your time for it in advance.

Rijeka has a spacious pedestrian zone, ideal for a relaxing stroll. The fish restaurants are good, fresh and delicious. The large harbor is a highlight and there is always something going on. Negative points: You expect sights like in Istria in vain, the city is very industry-oriented, which is evident from the cityscape. The buses are unpunctual, so it's better not to rely on them. A trip to Opatija is worthwhile. Only 20 minutes away by car. I wouldn't recommend the bus because of its unpunctuality, but a cab is not expensive for this short distance. Rijeka is definitely worth a short trip.
